Eccentricity in the roller converts tensile force directly into gripping pressure.

Cross-hatched serration closes against a flat back plate, securing sheet materials, polymers and some rubbers. Two sizes cover flat and dumb-bell specimens upto 25 mm wide and 5 mm thick, and dumb-bell samples upto 50 mm wide and 6 mm thick.

Wrapping the specimen spreads grip stress over the full contact arc.

Wrapping the specimen before it is clamped prevents grip breaks — the failure that happens at the jaw rather than in the material — by distributing grip stress around the bollard's circumference. Yarn, wool, man-made textile fibres, threads and wires are wound on before the free end is clamped, and release is immediate at the end of each test.

Direct compression applies flexural load using geometry matched to the method.

A light duty fixture is offered in 1, 2, 5 and 10 kN with span supports of 10, 15, 20 or 25 mm diameter, and a heavy duty attachment extends from 20 kN upto 200 kN. Spans adjust from 25 to 300 mm for samples upto 150 mm wide, covering timber, metal board and rigid plastics.

Four point loading holds the bending moment constant between the inner supports.

Force is introduced at two positions along the span and reacted outboard of them, so a defined length of the specimen carries equal stress rather than a single contact line. Failure therefore occurs at the weakest section of that length.

Positive location dictates where shear develops within the specimen under test.

The body seats each half of the specimen against the loading direction and prevents rotation or out-of-plane movement during the test. Alignment is a property of the fixture, so successive determinations are made under identical geometric conditions.

Shear strength results from tension along a single load axis.

The fixture holds the specimen within the tension train and transfers force across the interface under test, without introducing bending or torsional components. Mounting is to the same load frame and pull rods used for tensile determinations.

Slant Shear Fixture

Inclined seating loads a bonded joint in combined compression and shear.

The two halves of the assembly are held at a fixed angle, so the adhesive line carries a defined ratio of normal and sliding stress. Comparative work on competing adhesive systems is therefore made on a common basis.

Peak withdrawal load quantifies the retention timber offers a mechanical fixing.

Screws and nails are drawn from a wood sample and the maximum force required is recorded, in accordance with ASTM D1037, ASTM D143 and ASTM D1761. Test pieces of 50 mm × 50 mm × 150 mm allow different boards, densities and fastener types to be compared on one arrangement.

Fixture design follows ISO 7886-1 Annex G for sterile single-use hypodermics.

Plunger friction, the force to eject from a syringe or syringe-and-needle device, breakaway at the start of injection and the sustaining force through it are all measured. Volume bands below 2 ml, 2–50 ml and above 50 ml are accommodated, upto a syringe diameter of 20 mm.
